At that time, Porsche took a good car, made it lower, lighter, better handling , faster a nd overall a better car, if not cheaper. (T hink of the 356 as an improved beetle)
Nowadays, Porsche would take a 356 and make it higher, heavier, slower and overall a worse car, certainly not cheaper either. (T hink of their SUVs as an worsened 911 or Panamera).
